About YHHN

What is the Yorkshire and Humberside Haematology Network (YHHN)?

It is a Network that was set up in 2004 by NHS doctors and nurses, and researchers at the University of York, who came together to learn more about blood cancers and blood disorders. YHHN covers 4 million people and includes the 14 hospital sites, all of which provide care for patients and families (see map). By collecting as much information as we can, we hope to learn more about blood cancers and disorders. Findings can also be used to improve the quality and organisation of healthcare, as well as patient outcomes.

If you receive care from a hospital shown in the map you may get a study pack from us. To help with our research, please complete and return the form in the pack. Alternatively, you can take part online by following the instructions in your study pack.

Who are we?

We are the Epidemiology & Cancer Statistics Group (ECSG), based in the Department of Health Sciences at the University of York. ECSG's staff includes researchers, nurses, data analysts and administrators. Together, the team invite people to join the study, collect, process and analyse data, and write up findings, which are then shared with clinical staff, other researchers, patients, relatives and the public. ECSG has a Patient Partnership which ensures patients and families have the opportunity to shape and design our studies and research questions, to ensure that we only carry out research that is relevant and important.

What do we do?

We collect data and samples from all patients with blood cancers and blood disorders across the YHHN area. This is used to answer research questions such as why such diseases develop,  how people respond to treatment and if new treatments make a difference. For more information, see Key Activities.

Who do we include?

All patients in the study area are included. No-one is excluded on the basis of protected characteristics (age, sex, ethnicity, gender, socio-economic status or any other factor). Since 2004, around 55,000 people have been included, increasing by around 2,500 each year. As YHHN's population (around 4 million people) is similar to that of the UK as a whole, our findings generally reflect the experiences of people with blood cancer and blood disorders across this area.

Further information, including statistics, can be found on the Haematological Malignancy Research Network website.
