Comparing the case cohort to the general population

Description of the image

This project involves looking at how the health of people with blood cancer differs from that of people without blood cancer, both in the years before cancer is diagnosed and in the years after.

The Yorkshire and Humberside Haematology Network (YHHN) routinely collects information about patients with blood cancer diagnosed in the 14 hospitals within our area; and NHS Digital supply information about these patients, including hospital attendances, cancer diagnoses and deaths.  This information comes from Hospital Episode Statistics (HES), the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and the National Cancer Registration & Analysis Service (NCRAS).

In order to determine how the health of patients who have these cancers differs from that of people who do not, NHS Digital have also matched each member of YHHN’s patient cohort to ten people born in the same year who do not have a blood cancer (comparison cohort); providing us with the same information as they do for YHHN’s patient cohort.  Importantly, this comparison cohort is anonymized to ensure that individuals cannot be identified.
